The oceanic principle, known in the Argentine bibliography as the bioceanic principle, and also called the Atlantic-Pacific principle,[1] is a criterion or doctrine of territorial division that Argentina tried to apply as a principle of international law in its limits with Chile, of which this country strictly rejected its existence.

Argentina understood that its essential form was made explicit on May 1, 1893 in the Additional and Clarifying Protocol to the Treaty of 1881, postulating that in its American territories Chile cannot claim any point towards the Atlantic Ocean, while Argentina cannot claim it towards the Pacific Ocean.[2] This Argentine interpretation has never been applied.

This Argentine interpretation has never been applied in the determination of the frontier and has never been internationally recognized.[3]: 109 At present the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Argentina and Chile leaves the Picton, Nueva, Lennox, Terhalten, Bernavelt, Hornos, Deceit and other islands with coasts in the east under Chilean sovereignty. This bilateral treaty has been ratified by both countries and has been in force since 1985.
