Barry University is a private Catholic university founded in 1940 by the Dominican Sisters of the Congregation of the Most Holy Rosary.[3] Located in Miami Shores, Florida, a northern suburb of downtown Miami, it is one of the largest Catholic universities in the Southeast and is within the territory of the Archdiocese of Miami.
The university offers more than 100 programs of study, from undergraduate to doctoral, in a number of areas, including: business, social work, law, nursing, health sciences, education, and liberal arts programs. Comprised of six schools and two colleges, Barry University has more than 7,000 students, a main campus of 54 buildings, a branch campus in Tallahassee, a law school in Orlando, and 50,000 alumni.[5] Barry College was founded as an undergraduate university in 1955.
Barry College was founded as a women’s college by a pair of brothers: the Reverend Patrick Barry, Bishop of St. Augustine, and his sister, Reverend Mother Mary Gerald Barry, OP, then prioress of Adrian Dominican Sisters.[6] Construction of what was then Barry College for Women began in 1940, on what had previously been “an expanse of tropical vegetation.”[3] The vacant lot soon became the main campus in Miami Shores, Florida. The original campus consisted of five buildings. Mother Barry served as president of the institution in the 1940-1961 term.[5] The campus was built on the grounds of the Miami Shores campus.

Cherelle Griner, who earlier this month graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law, said she spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, as well as NBA commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert. She also credited Mercury for her support. But she is very concerned about Brittney’s well-being.
Brittney Griner was returning to Russia to complete her season at UMMC Ekaterinburg when she was arrested. Cherelle Griner said she was initially hopeful that Brittney’s detention would be brief. She also said she feels that if an NBA player were detained in Russia, there would be greater urgency on the part of the U.S. government.
Cherelle said Brittney was determined to finish her season in Russia, but was also anxious to stop going overseas. Many WNBA players compete overseas during the winter months to supplement their income, with high-profile stars like Griner earning more than $1 million per season.
