Ie university communication and digital media

The streets of your city speak, can you hear it? | Isidro Jiménez

Digital competence is one of the key skills that any citizen must develop throughout his life at different levels. For their part, future teachers are the essential agents who will be responsible for introducing and developing this competence in future generations, so having a high level of teaching digital competence has become a necessary aspect for the society of the XXI century.

In this complex and dizzying context, it is inevitable to question aspects such as the real level of digital competence of teachers, the adaptation of teacher training curricula to the current digital demand, or the inclusion and adoption of good teaching practices with ICT in teacher training curricula, among others.

The Commission of the European Communities itself (2002, 18) clearly indicates that there is a training deficit in teachers with respect to ICT in a double dimension: 1) linking ICT to pedagogical practices and 2) linking ICT in relation to disciplines and promoting interdisciplinarity.

The causes that could explain this situation are diverse and range from the low volume of training activities that have been carried out, the type of initial training put in place, the conceptual perspectives from which both have been approached, the speed with which, in the knowledge society, ICTs are being incorporated into society in general and into education in particular in such a way that some are no sooner born or appear than they die or disappear, or the attractiveness of mere training in the instrumental component of ICTs.

Assuming this situation from the outset, both in terms of the lack of training and the possible ineffectiveness of many of the activities carried out, in this article we will address three questions that seem interesting in this regard: why is teacher training in ICT necessary, what advantages can we obtain from it, and how should we approach it?

Astronomy communication has not only come from Mexico City’s IA. Activities in this area have been carried out since 1970 with the start of the Instituto de Astronomía campus Ensenada, where the National Astronomical Observatory is located.

When Dr. José Franco’s tenure as director of the IA ended, Dr. William Lee, the new director of the IA, and his team decided to initiate a second stage in the Institute’s science outreach and promotion project. The first phase of this stage was led by Dr. Elena Jiménez Baylón, a researcher at the IA, who had an interest but no training in science communication. Because Dr. Baylón decided to return to her research work, in 2012 a new team was formed led by Dr. Bárbara Pichardo, IA researcher, as head of the Office of Communication. At this stage, Brenda Arias was hired as science communicator and Mario de Leo as the person in charge of the Institute’s social networks. The physicist Enrique Anzures was also hired to collaborate in the organization of IA events. This team has achieved an important presence in the media and has actively participated in the organization of massive events, in particular the Night of the Stars. It has also been successful in the management of social networks, the cinema debate “CinedebArte Conciencia” and in the creation of astronomical exhibitions.
